Gear milling is a common CNC milling operation and gear-cutting process of creating a gear. It can be operated either after or instead of forming processes including casting, forging, and extruding. Gears are usually made from metal, plastic, and wood.
Gear gashing is a gear machining process, very much like gear milling, utilizing the principle of cutting one or more tooth (or tooth space) at a time. The term "GASHING" today applies to the roughing, or roughing and finishing, of coarse diametral pitch gears and sprockets.
Machining gears normally requires dedicated tools for the specific gear profile. InvoMilling™ is a process for machining external gears, splines and straight bevel gears and allows for in-house gear milling in standard machines. By changing the CNC program instead of changing the tool, one tool set can be used for many gear profiles.

Basics of the Gear Milling or Gashing Process. With gashing, the gear wheel is held steady while a milling cutter advances axially along the face width of the gear blank. This process can be used to rough or semi-finish the tooth space with extra stock allowance for successive hobbing, grinding, shaving, or honing operations.
First comes gear milling. The material softness enables creating the part with more ease while achieving great tolerances. The gears then go through a heat treatment process to harden the surface. After that, CNC turning will be responsible for the final outcome. Suitable Materials. CNC milling can be used on a variety of different materials.
